About the event
Our programme for ‘A Choral Christmas’ features sacred and secular texts from across the centuries, ranging from polychoral music by Andrea Gabrieli, motets by Poulenc and a classic from Herbert Howells to Sir John Rutter’s timeless Shepherds’ Pipe Carol.
American composer Samuel Barber’s splendid setting of a Laurie Lee poem, Twelfth Night, is an old favourite of ours. It will be heard alongside pieces by British composers Cecilia McDowall, Gabriel Jackson, Sally Beamish and Zoe Dixon.
The new work in our programme this year is an arrangement by JCS President Roxanna Panufnik of the Maronite Syriac Christmas hymn Glory be to the Word – it is also being performed by almost 40 choirs across the UK, USA and Australia as a fundraiser for ‘Three Peas’, a charity helping refugees stranded in camps on the Greek Islands.
